Peace of Mind (Gloria Bennett) 5

Yay! for whoever that has kept reading the story. Not much left after this post. Maybe two more posts left give or take.

“J-James’s death.” replied Gloria with some hesitation, mixed with a deep sigh. Upon hearing this, Emily immediately wrapped her hands around the hands of Gloria and gave a tight squeeze. A rush of immense love traveled up and down and all over the spine of Gloria. It send shivers inside and out of her body, yes, this was the love of James. There was such an abundance, all at once, her empty heart was being filled with compassion.
“Oh, mom.” answered Emily now, embracing Gloria tenderly. Secretly, Emily had been trying to forget about her dad, since the moment she knew he was dead. Gloria knew this for a fact, she could read it right off of Emily's eyes. Frequently, Gloria could sense when Emily would recall and reminisces about James, little snapshots appearing from long ago. Gloria, often wondered how Emily felt when she first realized, that all those precious moments would stay frozen in time forever. How did she feel to be forced to accept the cold truth that he was long gone? Did Emily just wanted rid herself of that overbearing feeling? Why? Gloria, couldn’t fathom such an outrageous notion; why on earth would Emilly want to forget? Gloria refused to forget James, she was safekeeping everything about him, every single detail, she wouldn’t let any of his belongings erode with dust.
Every way Emily looked, she saw another object symbolizing the past, giving way for more memories, Gloria knew this, but dared not neglect anything that once belonged to James. Gloria still kept his office exactly the same way he left it, she would regularly dust it and vacuum it. It as if the entire house was trapped in the past! Emily had tried to tell Gloria how she felt about the car accident, about Abigail, about the house, but all of her attempts and efforts fell short. Why couldn’t Gloria let go? Why can’t she just move on?
However the instant, Emily embraced her mom, Gloria knew that she finally understood why she never stopped the tradition, never stopped giving care to all the little nick nacks that were once his property, it was her way of keeping him alive. It was her way of keeping the family knit together and deep down inside, Gloria knew that Emily wanted to keep holding on as well, at least just for a little longer.
“Okay,” answered Emily with a long sigh, “Tomorrow, we’ll sign up together...” Gloria was glad when she heard those words flowing through her eardrums.
“Thank you, Emily. I love you.” said Gloria in a hushed voice, but loud enough for Emily to hear it. They embraced each other one more time and proceeded to stroll down the little dirt path. Gloria and Emily walked hand in hand. It was abundantly clear, that their bond was grounded with love and intimacy. A kind of union that would be forever cherished. Gloria felt so peaceful, so secure, but there was a voice calling out to her, in the back of her mind, “Gloria, what are you doing?”
Something wasn’t right. Emily’s hand began to blur and fade away. Gloria looked down and saw that the orchids were dying. All around her, the garden was deteriorating and the voice was echoing louder and louder, “Gloria, what are you doing? Come here.”
What was happening? Gloria was returning to current events, to the present. The flashback was coming to a close. Her daydreaming was fading away so rapidly, all at once, Gloria, heard the once faint whisper, turn into a clanging cymbal, yanking her back to reality.
“Gloria, are you okay? Come on, get up,” it was the voice of Abigail, but it was not as lively as it was four weeks ago. Her voice sounded drained, but it was also as if, she was trying to hide her exhaustion. Gloria, slowly came to her feet, her face was glassy and her eyes were distant, it would seem that Gloria was taciturn, she had been this way ever since the beginning of the investigation. Abigail knew she had to do something to make Gloria better.
“Gloria, there’s someone here, who wants to talk to you, he wants to help you,” said Abigail, softly leading her back inside the household.
“Who is it?” asked Gloria in an extra hushed voice.
“His name is Dr. Weber, he can help you get better,” Gloria did not answer back, all she did was nod. Once they entered the house, Abigail took Gloria to the living room, where Dr. Weber was located. He was wearing a brown suit with elbow paddings. He was holding a black notebook and fountain pen with marble patterns.
“Hello, Miss Gloria how are we today?” he asked rising to his feet, extending his hand for the traditional handshake. Gloria did not reach out her hand, she didn’t even look at him, all she did was nod, with an expressionless face.
“Yes, well,” he replied putting his hand down, “If you would be good enough to sit, anywhere is fine, I’ll just be a moment with your daughter, in the kitchen.” Gloria sat down, in a rather slow fashion. Abigail led Dr. Weber to the kitchen.
“What is it doctor?” she asked a little tuckered out.
“How long has she been acting like this?”
“She has been improving, I mean compared to what she was like the first week,” answered Abigail trying to contain a yawn, which she was unable. Dr. Weber nodded his head in agreement most likely, “And what about you? How do you feel today?”
“I’m sorry?”
“You look exhausted,” said Dr. Weber very blunt.
“I am trying to solve the murder of Emily, keep good grades, help Gloria and-”
“And you are wearing yourself down, working to the bone,” interrupted Dr. Weber.
“Hey,” answered Abigail slightly annoyed, “I’m doing what I can for Gloria.”
“You don’t refer to her as your mother? Why is that?” questioned Dr. Weber, who was now opening his black notebook, jotting down notes. The nerve! Abigail’s tiredness was being replaced with anger. She didn’t like where this conversation was going.
“I’m not the one you should be asking questions to. I don’t need help, Gloria needs help,” Abigail was trying to keep her voice down, but she was doing a poor job. Just when she was about to say something else to Dr. Weber, probably another complaint, she took a breath instead, “Look... everyone says, you’re the best at what you do. You’ve been successful for years.”
“Only because I earn the trust of my patients,” said the Dr. Weber with affirmation.
“I am not your patient, Gloria is. She rarely eats, she rarely drinks!,” Abigail was trying to contain herself as best she could.
“In order for me to fully help Miss Gloria, I will need to know both sides of the story. I cannot promise you full recovery, unless I have full cooperation from both parties,” explained Dr.Weber very professional like.
“At the moment, all you need to hear is Gloria’s side of the story,” scoffed Abigail, “She’s...been through hell.” Dr. Weber nodded his head, left the kitchen and proceeded to the living room. Abigail heaved a sigh of exhaustion mixed with frustration. What if Dr. Weber was right? She’s been working herself exceedingly, and for what? To solve a homicide case that can’t be solved? Abigail had thoroughly analysed several reports, her eyes were weary of looking at the same thing for hours on end. Repeatedly, she had studied crime scene photos, along with leading detectives, and found nothing of any importance. No fingerprints, all the DNA they had found proved profitless. By the end of the month, the spirits of all the officers in the case had deflated. What was left?
*    *    *

By the end of the fifth week, the police department gave up, Abigail protested loudly against this, but that didn’t stop the inevitable. All the reports, photos and medical files were put away, along with the other cold, unsolved mysteries. The police moved on to other more serious crimes, that needed their attention. The case was close, forcing Abigail to quit. That once intense urge to solve the murder of Emily had vanished. All those sleepless nights, seemed pointless now. Gloria was unaware of this, she didn’t know the case was closed. Ever since the murder, she had detached herself from reality. Her mind was seldom in the present, it was bent on the past. Gloria had been reliving past events with Emily, fond memories, when she had security, certainty, but most of all peace. She was clinging on to false hope, that the police would find the culprit and bring that bastard to justice.

Peace of Mind (Gloria Bennett) 4

I hope you are finding the story interesting. If there is any grammar errors, point them out to me, as I would want to correct those.

When Abigail heard the words “She’s dead”, at first she thought it was a lie, a vicious, vulgar lie! That there had been a horrible mistake. It couldn’t be true, but Abigail could see the mass of police officers gathered around the shed, she could see the yellow tape blocking the entrance. Why else would there be so many people? No, it couldn’t be true. Abigail kept on repeating the same words inside her mind: it’s a lie, a mistake, it’s a lie, a mistake! Over and over, but it wasn’t enough, she could feel a tugging sensation in her soul. How could tonight get any worse, but it did, for in the midst of her rushing thoughts, she suddenly heard the lady say, “She was raped.” She was utterly speechless. Her one and only sister, raped and the worst part was all those years that Abigail could have spent with Emily creating memories, she spent it in a corner being jealous. Instead of joining Emily and Gloria when they were laughing or playing, she was just watching in the background. Abigail for so many years had the chance to be Emily’s big sister, but never did. This must have been some sick, twisted dream, a nightmare, concluded Abigail.
“Abigail, I can’t possibly imagine what’s going through your mind, but we would like to ask you a few questions, if you’re up to it,” asked the officer lady giving Abby a comforting hand on the shoulder, which didn’t give her any comfort or reassurance whatsoever. Abigail reluctantly agreed. Within moments, she was bombarded with question after question, she tried her best to answer all of them, but her mind was still much in shock. It was as if her thoughts went numb. She couldn’t make sense of anything.

*    *    *
Gloria hadn’t heard a word from Abigail for quite some time, what could have happen? Was Abigail successful in finding Emily? Was Emily safe? And if so, why didn’t she call? Why aren't they calling now? Numerous questions flooding her mind and Gloria didn’t know the answer to any of them. The clock hit 2:15 a.m, it had been a little over an hour, since Abigail last contacted Gloria. However, Gloria’s mind wasn’t on Abigail, all she was thinking about was Emily. Even though the night sky was pitch black and not a single sound stirred loud enough to be heard, and even though Gloria was exhausted, she wouldn’t allow her body, herself a moment of rest, of peace. Gloria was dragging her weary feet in circles all throughout the house; her mind was filled with worries, concerns and tensions. Then suddenly, Gloria heard a loud knock at the front door. Her heart leaped for joy, she instantly thought it was Emily, she didn’t even give it a second thought, within seconds, she quickly opened the door.
However, when the door was opened wide, her smile vanished, her face changed from joyous to confused, her heart sank. It was just Abigail standing with a small group of police officers. She didn’t understand.
“What’s going on? Where’s Emily?”
When they told Gloria what had happened, she dared not believe any of the words emanating from their mouths. Emily probably just went over to one of her friends house for a sleepover or something along those lines.
“What are you talking about? She must be at a friends house. Just tell me which one,” replied Gloria with her usual softer than necessary voice.
“I’m sorry ma’am, but all that we have said is true,” answered the same officer with the booming voice. Again, they explained what had happened, Gloria heard every word that they said, but she didn’t comprehend. Her sanity was clouded with emotions, affecting her discernment heavily. Gloria stared into the eyes of every person in the room, their faces seemed honest and sincere, but it couldn’t be true...why would it?
“No..no. Emily is at a friend’s house. Please just tell me which one...why won’t you tell me?” asked Gloria with an abundant amount of concern pouring from her eyes. Abigail couldn’t contain herself much longer, she was filled anger, sadness, resentment, so many different emotions, all bottled inside. She was dying to burst out and rip off the mask, of which she made and held, for years upon years! Alas, Abigail couldn’t keep silent.
“Mom! Emily is dead, gone forever!” she exploded with a fountain of tears, she once kept locked away, “She’s not at a friend’s house, for heavens sakes mom! Emily is dead, she was raped! And there’s nothing you can do or they can do!” Abigail was finally releasing a load of tension and burdens off her shoulders. The cops had no idea how to respond or if they should respond at all, they were caught totally off guard. Abigail was about to open her mouth to relinquish more of her tucked away anguish, but she was unable. Abigail stopped cold, all at once and quietly wept, but she did not lower her head, her eyes were piercing right back Gloria. Gloria stood still, motionless, with no expression.
Then it happened, it clicked, Emily was dead. Gloria felt as if she was being crushed by a force she could not see nor fathom. She was utterly devastated. Just the thought of losing Emily, no not Emily, she was losing James all over again! Gloria couldn't bare the thought, not again. It was a lie, all of what Abigail said, of what the cops said- a lie! She refused to believe anything that was happening. She denied it all.
“You’re lying! All of you, you’re lying!” She loudly protested, “Emily can’t be dead, she just can’t,” sobbed Gloria, “No, no, no. Tell me it is not so!” Gloria fell on her knees covering her hands over her face. It was true. Emily had died. She began to sway back and forth saying in a hushed voice, “No, no, no, no, no” with no indication if she would ever stop.
An officer looked at Abigail, who was still holding her solemn face, and said, “She needs you, she needs you bad.” Abigail’s face slowly softened, she couldn’t leave her mother in loss, in distress. With some hesitation, Abigail approached Gloria, knelt down beside her and gently wrapped her arms around her. This would be the first time, in years, that she would give her mom a sincere hug. When Gloria felt the heartbeat of Abigail against her chest, it was beating just as fast hers, that’s when she realized, Abigail was just scared as she was, they were both stricken with heavy burdens of heartache. Gloria, extended her arms and embraced now her only child. At first, Abigail didn’t know how to react, could this really be happening? Was Gloria really clinging onto her, just as she once clinged onto Emily? As Gloria hugged Abigail tighter, she dared not loosen her grip. It became all so clear to Abigail, she had to stay strong for Gloria’s sake, she was now Gloria’s only source of comfort. Nevertheless, Abigail knew that Gloria would never feel even a small sense peace, until she find out who killed Emily.
With that concept embedded in her mind, Abigail helped Gloria to her feet and replied to the officers, “Please go and find out who did this, and bring that bastard to justice. My mother... and I will do anything we can to corporate.” Abigail was smeared with tear stains on her cheeks slowly rolling down, but she didn’t bother to wipe her face.
Since that dreadful morning, the investigation progressed rapidly. Abigail set aside all folly feelings, so she could help her mother live day to day, as much as possible. She was so ensnared with the idea of being strong “for Gloria’s sake”, she didn’t give herself a chance to mourn. As for Gloria, she fell hard and deep. Her heart sank to such a degree, no matter how many times she cried, the tears would not stop. Gloria, would walk idle around the house, for countless of hours, with no sign of hope. It had been three long, tormenting weeks, since the death of Emily and the cops were still vigorously interrogating, seeking answers to questions, working late hours all because Abigail wouldn’t let them stop. However, for one reason or another, they hit a wall. By the fourth week, the detectives were stuck, they had no leads, their previous suspect had a rock solid alibi with eyewitnesses, who could vouch. There was so much DNA smothered in the shed, but most of it belonged to Emily and the small scrap of DNA that wasn’t Emily’s, had no matches. They had requisitioned Kevin time and time again, they even questioned Eric, among many other teenagers who ran away during the party, all of their replies just made way for more confusion and dead ends.
One day, while the investigation was dwindling, while Gloria was alone dragging her weary bones throughout the empty house, she stumbled across the garden. The garden that once was her sanctuary, that once protected her from agony, was now just another reminder of everything she had lost or what she was losing. She drifted her way, outside, toward the bed of flowers and pillows of grass. As her eyes slowly traveled up the dirt path, they fell upon a section of dying orchids. Instantly, her mind vanished from the present, and reappeared on the day she saw Emily for the last time. They were walking together in the midst of the recently bloomed orchids.
“Oh, mom, they’re simply marvelous!” said Emily with unmistakable glee in her voice.
“Emily, dear, do you really think so?” inquired Gloria earnestly.
“Mother, what’s wrong?” asked Emily leaning close to Gloria, “You’re going to be amazing next week in the flower competition. You did sign up, right?”
“We always sign up together.”
“Don’t be silly. This year, you should take all credit. We signed up together last year and the year before that, in fact we’ve been doing it together, since I was six.” said Emily staring lovingly at the flowers, “It was never me, it always you. You were the champion for four straight years.” Gloria, God knows why, began to blush.
“No, it was us, we’re a team. This is our pride and joy.” replied Gloria kneeling down to feel the petals.
“This is more your pride and joy than it is mine.” said Emily, trying to explain herself, now kneeling beside Gloria, “I remember... it was dad, who started this tradition. He’d always sign the entire family up, but after he...things changed... you became distant, to everyone except me. Why?” asked Emily looking straight at Gloria. Gloria didn’t want to make eye contact, but she couldn’t bring herself to turn away from Emily, she loved her too much.
“Over the years, I’d notice now and then, how lonely Abigail would look. At first, I didn’t pay much attention...which I now regret...” What was Emily getting at?
“I don’t think I understand?” said Gloria with a dazed voice.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you, I mean... you spend a lot of time with me, but never with Abigail...I guess what I’m trying to say is,” said Emily trying to pick her words wisely, “Why did you change? What happened?” Gloria’s mind was boggled, why was Emily asking her these questions? She never did before. Why now?

Peace of Mind (Gloria Bennett) 3

Exactly, where the story was cut off from part 2.

Once Abigail hung up the phone she began to ask as many people as she could about Emily once more. She had no luck whatsoever. Finally she decided to ask Kevin, the host of the party as well as the person who lived in the house.
“Hey, hi, Kevin, have you seen Emily lately?” asked Abigail.
“Last time I saw her, she was by the swimming pool, but that was like two hours ago or so, why?” answered Kevin in a very easy-going tone.
“Well, I’m sure it’s nothing, but I haven’t seen Emily for about the same time too,” explained Abigail, “Do you happen to-” Abigail was interrupted by some extremely loud teenager.
“Oh, hey sorry, I won’t take long. Kevin, there’s no more beer, no beer means no party. What should we do? The guests are getting restless.”
“No worries, Eric. I stashed a load of beer inside the shed, way out in the backyard behind the pool. My parents have no idea. I’m the only one with the key, let’s go and get some right now,” replied Kevin, proud of his cleverness. They both turned around and walked away, but Kevin quickly came back and said, “I’ll be right back, hold that thought, okay Abby?”
“Sure, no problem,” answered Abigail fiddling with a napkin. As Kevin and Eric walked away, Abigail could not stop fiddling with napkins, she would stretch and tear them apart. For the first time ever, she was genuinely concerned for Emily. The party was so grand in every way, it’s understandable to lose track of certain guests, but for over two hours? That doesn’t sound likely or coincidental. While Abigail was about ready to rip into pieces the fifth napkin, Kevin along with Eric were already outside making their way to the shed.
“This party is amazing!” exclaimed Eric, “And that, Abby chick is hot. When are you going to make your move?”
“I don’t know man. I’ve been hearing some strange things about her. Ever since some tragic loss in the family, her mother only leaves the house to go buy groceries plus I hear that she constantly pours herself in studying.”
“Dude are you serious? You’re actually worrying about family details?” asked Eric annoyingly, very obvious to Kevin, “And how do you even know all of this?”
“There called rumors, okay and I’m serious. Don’t you thinks it’s odd?” asked Kevin,“I mean, if it wasn’t for the fact that Emily occasionally invites Abby to parties, I bet she wouldn’t even have a social life. Well, maybe I’m exaggerating. I don’t know what to think. Abigail sure is a strange girl at best.
“Speaking of strange, why is the door of the shed wide open?” questioned Eric pointing toward the shed, “Didn’t you say you were the only one with the key?”
“Yea, w-what are you talking about?” Kevin swiftly walked over to the shed to get a better look, “I think...I think someone kicked the door open.”
“What? Serious?” asked Eric quickly walking to where Kevin was standing, “You think someone broke in? Who would do that?”
“Why ask me?” answered Kevin squinting his eyes in the darkness, as if that would do any good, especially since it was pitch black, “Do me a favor help me find the light switch, my dad installed one about two weeks back.”  For a good twenty seconds they both began to move their hands up and down along the wooden walls of the shed, careful not to get a splinter, “I found it,” said Kevin and without wasting another second, he flipped the switch, and before his very eyes he saw something that would hunt him longer than he could've ever imagine, “Oh my god,” Eric couldn’t even speak upon seeing such a grotesque sight, his eyes remained wide open with shock, fear, and doubt.
“Oh my God!” repeated Kevin, he couldn’t believe his own eyes. The cramped shed was a complete wreck, shelves had been knocked over, shards of broken beer bottles were scattered across. Almost everything was either toppled over, broken, bent or ruined. However, despite the hell ridden room, all their focused was upon a young teenager girl laying on the floors of the shed, with not one sign of life to be seen. They were unable to see her face for her hair was nothing more but a catastrophe, her makeup was smeared with tear stains flowing down her cheeks, parts of her clothes were ripped and torn. Dark purple bruises covered her wrists, arms and neck, her legs also shared the markings of purple bruising. There was a small amount of blood on the girl’s nose, as if someone punched her. Most of her nails were chipped or broken or torn off. Her blue sandals were ripped apart. Kevin and Eric were trapped in fear, it was as if their minds could not function.
Finally, Eric came to his senses, “Check, check h-h-her pulse!” he shouted. Kevin rushed over toward the body, as he leaned closer to feel a pulse, he had a strange feeling that he knew this girl. He quickly shook it away, he waited, but he didn’t feel anything, “She’s dead,” answered Kevin with a shaky voice.
“Crap! This is, this is just crap! Crap! Do we- do we even know this girl?” asked Eric frantically, unable to contain himself whatsoever. Kevin gently moved the girl’s hair revealing her face, “Oh my God! It’s, it’s Emily!” Eric couldn’t move, he couldn’t even speak. Kevin, on the other hand, instantly came to his feet and began to dial a number onto his cellphone.
“W-what what are you doing?” asked Eric frantically.
“I’m calling 911.”
“Yeah, good idea...What!? No, man you can’t! The cops will be over this and see everything, they’ll see the drugs, the beer, the everything! You can’t!” protested Eric.
“There’s a dead body in the shack and it happens to be Emily; my friend! And you’re telling me not to call 911?! And for what?” answered Kevin with cleched fits and swelled up eyes. Eric’s eyes were racing to and fro, everything was happening so fast, Eric tried to stammer out a response, but Kevin didn’t care to wait any longer.
“911, what is your emergency?”
“Y-yes! My name is Kevin Steele, th-there’s...there’s a dead girl in my shack, I think she was murdered or something. Get over here fast!” pleaded Kevin with urgency.
“Okay, I need you to calm down. Now, what is your location?”
*    *    *
The police arrived in Kevin’s house within minutes, along with an ambulance truck. It took a while and great effort for the police to gather and calm the mass of high schoolers. When the cops first arrived, panic rapidly spread across the household, as if it was some kind of wild fire. All the teenagers thought they were “busted”. Everyone, everywhere were running about the house, with an abundance of urgency, it was almost as if they were a bunch of headless chickens. Abigail had to muscle her way through the various frightened faces, twisting and turning her body, she finally was able to reach Kevin, who was earnestly trying to grab the attention of an officer.
“Officer, sir, I need to take you to the shed right away!”
“Yea, just as soon as my men cleans up this mess, kid!” answered the policeman with a booming voice filled with frustration.
“Kevin! What in the world is going on? Why are the cops here?” asked Abigail frantically. Abigail didn’t know what was going on, her mind was completely lost. Kevin looked at Abigail only to turn his head away the very next second. He couldn't bring himself to tell her what happened, let alone look her in the eye.
“Officer, please!” shouted Kevin.
“What’s going on?” asked Abigail twice as earnestly as before, but Kevin didn’t respond. Abigail fell deep in thought, what could have happen? Who called the police? Why? Was it illegal drugs or something? Her mind was bombarded with a hoard of ideas and notions.
Eventually, all the commotion died down. The cops were successful in gathering most of the teenagers; as a few were able to escape, Eric included. Kevin was finally able to lead a small group of policemen and women to the shed. Abigail was waiting quite anxiously in the living room, with the rest of the confuse teenagers. She couldn’t understand what in the world was happening? Before she could begin to squeeze the puzzle pieces together, she saw a forensic team rush inside the house, then quickly left into the backyard, past the swimming pool and toward the shed. Following them was a group of policemen carrying a big roll of yellow crime scene tape. Abigail stretched her neck as far she could, as an attempt to see what was taking place. While she was witnessing all of this, back at the shed, the police were asking Kevin various questions.
“How did you discover the body?” asked the same officer with the booming voice.
“We were out of beer, so I went into the shed to get more. My friend Eric came with me, but I don’t think he’s here anymore. I think he was one of the few who got away.
“What’s he hiding?” asked the officer sneering rudely.
“He ran away, because he didn’t want to get busted for underage drinking I guess.”
“And what about the victim, do you know her?”
“Her name is...was” began Kevin trying to stay compose, “was Emily Bennett , we were close friends,” Kevin was unable to keep still, his hands trembled, “She’s the sister of Abigail, one of the guests...guests here,” his voice started to break.
“Here, right now? We’ll need to ask her questions right away. She might be able to shed some light about all of this,” explained the officer in a very systematic voice, “Someone go get this Abigail, and uh... be sure to break it to her gently...better make it female.”
Abigail, was sitting on the floors of the living room, she was deep in thought, when suddenly a police woman approached her, “Abigail Bennett?”
“Yes...” answered Abigail hesitantly.

“Come with me please.”

Peace of Mind (Gloria Bennett) 2

Continuing from exactly where I left off. I hope you are enjoying the story so far.

“Pleeaase,” Emily sure was being persistent.
“Will Gloria be able to survive without you?” asked Abigail with a faint hint of anger, much too small for either of them to notice. Emily gave a confused look, almost as if she had no idea what Abigail meant by that remark. This in fact, would be true indeed. Emily knew that Gloria spent more time with her, over Abigail, but she was unconscious of Gloria’s reasons for doing so, as well as the damage it had inflicted upon Abigail over the course of many years.
“Can we mom? Can we please? The party is tonight at eight, at Kevin’s house. Can we mom?” pleaded Emily. Gloria didn’t know what to say or how to react. A night without Emily; she was Gloria’s only way to James. It’s only one night; it won’t even be for the whole night, a few measly hours, surely Gloria would be able to manage. Emily eagerly waited for an answer. Abigail was fully prepared to hear a big no.
“W-who would take you there and…and back?” she asked very slowly.
“No problem. Abigail has a car, she’ll be more than happy to drive” replied Emily giving Abigail a reassuring nudge to which Abigail responded by rolling her eyes.
“Go…go to the party have fun,” answered Gloria even slower and a little shaky.
“Thank you!” said Emily giving her mom an extra big hug, “Hey, I just remembered how are the orchids in the garden, have they bloomed yet?” asked Emily completely changing topics. Gloria’s eyes lit up. Before James passed away, he made the garden just for her, it was beautiful and together they made it extraordinary. After the incident, the garden quickly became Gloria’s sanctuary, whenever Emily was not around.
“Yes, they’re most beautiful. Do you want to see them?”
“Of course,” instantly Emily and Gloria left the living room, leaving Abigail alone, with no one to talk to, with only her thoughts to keep her company. Abigail closely watched them head for the garden, in the backyard; she could remember a time, when she was younger, how the whole family would play in the yard for countless of hours. She could recall the love that surrounded her; she could almost hear the joyful cries. However, all those memories were just memories, nothing more.
Later that day, a little after 7:30, Emily was pushing herself to get ready, painting her nails, while trying to pick the perfect outfit, Gloria was helping her. Abigail had been ready for quite some time and was waiting for them.
“Oh, mom, I can’t decide, blue sandals or green sandals?” asked Emily pacing back and forth, while biting her lips. Gloria couldn’t help but a smile. Watching Emily walk to and fro, send Gloria back in time. Whenever James got nervous, he would pace around in circles non-stop while chewing his lips, Emily did just the same.
“I like the blue sandals,” answered Gloria with a soft smile.
“You are so right. Abby! Abby are you ready? I’m ready,” called Emily.
“I’ve been ready!” shouted Abigail all the way from the living room, impatiently.
“Okay, uh, did I forget anything, oh, geez, my phone! No time, I got to go. See you later mom, don’t forget, tomorrow, you and me, movies,” said Emily giving Gloria a tremendous hug. Before Gloria could say good–bye back, Emily and Abigail had already left the house. Gloria was completely alone, as she slowly walked down the corridor from Emily’s room, leading into the living room, she could vividly see her past memories roaming about the household. She saw the time when James would dance with her in the patio, under the moonlight. The time when they got back from their honeymoon, how James carried her through the threshold. She saw everything, every little detail. As the memories slowly drifted by, so did the hours, Gloria felt more and more tense. Ten minutes felt like an hour. It was almost as if time was intentionally moving slower.
Finally, the clock hit 12; Gloria thought for sure they would have come back from the party. She fervently waited and waited and waited. No one came, no one called; the clock now hit 1 a.m., but still nothing. Gloria was so nervous, she could feel a certain kind of void within her, quietly swallowing her whole. She wondered what could have happened, whenever Emily went out with friends, she would call every hour. However, over four hours had passed and she hadn't called once. This was completely out of Emily’s usual. Even though Gloria was exhausted, she dared not shut her eyes, not even for a brief moment. She was far too worried. Suddenly the home phone, in the kitchen, burst out ringing, breaking the silence. Gloria rushed over to answer it.
“Emily! Where are you?” she asked desperately.
“What? No, this is Abigail. I was calling because I was wondering if Emily was with you,” asked Abigail slightly annoyed by the fact that all Gloria cared about was Emily.
“No, she-she’s not. I’ve been…all alone,” replied Gloria in a low voice.
“Okay…that doesn’t make any sense. I haven’t seen Emily in the party for the last two hours. I thought maybe she got a ride home from one of her friends or something…” Gloria had no idea what to think or say. For a short moment they both kept quite. Silence fell, but quickly ended, “look, Emily forgot to bring her phone, so there’s no use trying to call her. I’ve been asking around for quite some time and no one has seen her.” Again, Gloria was speechless; her hands began to shake. Abigail waited for a response, for an answer of some kind.

“I’m going to ask around one more time, don’t get all panicky- I’m sure this is nothing to stress over,” with that Abigail hanged up the phone. Gloria was dumbfounded; she was left immobilized by fear and doubt- doubt that it was nothing.

Peace of Mind (Gloria Bennett) 1

This is a story that I wrote a while back not too while back, at least I don't think so. This story is a short story, but when I was finished with it, it was longer than I though it would be, but it's only 15 maybe 16 pages. That's not long at all. Someone can reading the whole thing in 45 minutes maybe less. Anyway, I will post pieces of it. One super long post is, I think, unreasonable.

I hope you like it. Note: I still can't decide on a title, therefore if you think of anything, let me know, as I will take it into consideration.

Peace of Mind (Gloria Bennett)
By: harcyMill

Meet Miss Gloria Bennett, a woman that can be described in many ways, one of which is, emotionally unstable. Of course, according to different people, they might not see it like that. They may just think of Miss Gloria as a person who happens to be, overprotective, a little too sensitive, fragile, as well as hesitant, and possibly, a wallflower. However, all these descriptions fit Miss Gloria Bennett immensely. Upon meeting Gloria for the first time, it would be hard for someone not to assume that she appeared a little nervous or agitated, maybe even tearful. What could be the reason for Gloria to behave in such a manner?
Truth be told, she wasn’t always like that. She wasn’t always excessively cautious; she wasn’t always Miss Gloria Bennett. Years ago, she was known as Mrs. Gloria Bennett. She used to be a wife, married to a wonderful man, James Bennett. While no marriage is perfect, their marriage would be the closest to perfection, no doubt. In fact, it would be no exaggeration to suggest that their love for each other was like wine, growing deeper and richer with age. Most marriages whither with the curse of time; however, the unity of Gloria of James only grew stronger as time passed by. Soon enough, what started as two, which turned into one, became three, and then four. They became a family. Gloria was now a mother with two lovely little girls. The first born was named Abigail; the second was named Emily. As the years swiftly flew by, Gloria gained many cherished memories, each and everyday. She had everything she could have asked for and then some.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end and Gloria was no exception. James Bennett was killed in a tragic and devastating car accident. His death was not instantaneous; he died very slowly on a hospital bed with Gloria by his side, helplessly and hopelessly watching. First it was head trauma then a brain hemorrhage followed by internal bleeding to the brain, which led to his death. The doctors did the very best they could, but even then, it wasn’t enough. It was never enough. As Gloria watched James’s body be placed in a six feet deep hole, she realized that the only thing in the world that gave her joy and peace was stripped away from her. She was now a widow, a single mother with two children, a nine-year old and a seven-year old. Gloria fell into a deep chasm of sadness and isolation. She could not compose herself nor could she contain her sorrow, the pain within her. The children were also thrown into devastation, but not as profound as Gloria, her tears were relentless. She felt completely overwhelmed, almost as if she was unable to breathe, but then suddenly, she felt the squeeze of two soft little hands. It was Emily, giving her mom a tight hug. It was Emily’s way of saying, that everything would be okay, eventually things would get better.
Gloria could feel the assurance of Emily, and strangely she could also feel a certain kind of love that only James gave her. As Gloria lifted her face, expecting to see the gentle face of Emily; however, she was shock to see the eyes and smile that once belonged to James. It was as clear as day. She could see and sort of feel a physical connection with James. She felt like this because Emily possessed several characteristics of James. Gloria felt as if, all her sorrow and pain were taken away, all the misery in her life, gone. Gloria hugged Emily back and consistently spent time with her since. She would talk with her, walk with her, stay up late with her. Together, Emily and Gloria formed a bond thicker than blood. The only way for Gloria to live through each day of hardship was by clinging onto everything she had of James. Every moment, every photograph, every faint memory, but the only possible way for Gloria to feel even feel a small sense of peace was with Emily. Unknowingly, Emily gave Gloria a way to feel the presence of James.
As the bond of Gloria and Emily deepened, Abigail was slowly cast aside. She felt as if she was being constantly forgotten. Day in and day out, Abigail would watch Gloria with Emily, and never once was she called for or mentioned or included. It was almost as if she didn’t matter to them. With each passing day, Abigail felt all the more invisible, expendable, and neglected. She tried to be the best at everything, in hopes for some recognition. She got better grades, she helped around the house, she was very athletic and talented, but all her attempts did little good. To say that Abigail was never loved would be a complete lie. However, how could Abigail even begin to realize that, when she didn’t feel any love? Whenever Abigail tried to do something to get noticed, she was unsuccessful. Soon enough, Abigail was forced to live with it, she couldn’t deny it, and she couldn’t fight it. Therefore, she wore a mask, concealing her anger, which kept on accumulating over time. A mask that hid her relentless jealously, to be noticed and cared for like Emily.

Years have passed since the death Gloria’s loving husband, but Gloria was still grieving, still clinging onto Emily. Abigail was still gripping with envy. Even though it had been several years, almost nothing changed. The only difference was that Abigail was now 19 years of age and Emily was 17 years of age. Other than that fact, time had placed no major difference in the household.
It was the second Friday, in the month of September. It was late in the afternoon, and Gloria was eagerly waiting upon the arrival of Emily, coming home from her senior high school. Gloria was pacing back and forth, even though her feet were hurting, she was too anxious to stop. She would continue, until Emily came home. At last, Gloria heard the door open, her heart nearly jumped out of her chest.
“Emily?” she asked, rushing to the front entrance. However, her heart sank, once she saw, it was only her daughter Abigail.
“Hi, mom, take a look, I got an A on my biology test, in my college class,” answered Abigail showing her mom a paper covered in big red letters: Awesome Job! A! “Isn’t that pretty cool?” asked Abigail hoping that Gloria would notice.
“Good for you,” replied Gloria in a daze, “Do you know where Emily is?”
“She’s still outside, still talking to her friends. She’ll come soon enough,” said Abigail in a heavy sigh, to which Gloria was completely oblivious to, all she could think about was Emily. Then, the door swung open, with Emily walking inside the living room.
“Hello everybody,” she said with a big grin, just like James. When Gloria saw that smile, the tension inside of her was melting away.
“Welcome home, Emily,” said Gloria with glee, “Did you have a nice day at school?” she asked giving a tight hug. Emily looked cheerful as usual, she was always the innocent kind of person, nice to everybody, but sometimes naïve. Abigail rolled her eyes in frustration, while crumbling her biology test and tossing it to the floor.
“It’s good to see you too, mom. Abby and I were invited to a super big party.”
“How was I invited? The only time I go to school, is to pick you up,” stated Abigail with a somewhat irritated voice.
“How true,” said Emily with great appreciation, “However it is required of every guest to bring a date, so Abigail Bennett will you be my date, please,” begged Emily using some sort of cute puppy face. Emily could tell that every so often, Abigail would feel left out; however Emily was unaware of the extent of loneliness Abigail felt. Nevertheless, now and then, Emily would try to include Abigail in her frequent social gatherings.

Fleeting Purity

Fleeting Purity
By: harcyMill

Late in the night, he travels up a path and though his surroundings appear unfamiliar by shadows and solids all new, he is not lost. In this he finds comfort, for bearing memories of old can be quite helpful at times. He reaches a crossroads, but both paths seem unwelcoming, both seem crude. He no longer feels secure about the path he travels, fearing the unknown can be quite understandable. This is new, he never wandered so far away before. A thick fog emerges from distant fields, enveloping him with coldness and uncertainty. Unable to see where the two paths lead, he decides to pick neither, he proceeds to walk straight. He travels up a grassy field, as it ascends, the fog intensifies. So thick, he is unable to see any shadows or solids to guide his walk.  He knows what is behind, but is clueless to what is before him. In the depths of his mind, he is saddened by the grimness of his mundane life, for being overly traditional can be quite dull. A gust of wind rushes pass him, and the smell of the ocean fills the air, the field has now become a steep hill. With his sight no longer his companion, and hearing is fruitless in dead pastures, he relies on touch and simulations to lead him forward. As he proceeds to carry his feet a great distance, the fog finally begins to clear, his sight is restored, and he hears crashing waves beating hard against sandy shores and the rocky cliff. The rush of winds grow stronger. Before his eyes, he sees the vast, unknown ocean stretching over miles.  It would seem that he reached a dead end, his wandering ceases. No where to go, except back to his abyss of a home.  He begins to wonder, why did God cast me on this earth with strict, unyielding people? So callous, and unforgiving to my only curiosity, to the fleeting purity of a heart. If there is hope in a bright future, one should look past their existing trials. However, it is often that hope of a good future is thwarted by the cruelty of one's past, of one's repeated shortcomings. Again, he thinks, beyond me is the end, behind me is the mob of judging eyes. Why are they always so eager to strike him down and point out his flaw? His one flaw! His mind proceeds to ponder, if I take but one step forward I shall slip away and the unmerciful waters will surely crush me, that will be my end. Lacking motivation to continue life and knowing full well that no one would care if he disappears, he reaches a conclusion. He took that one step forward. His body hits the ocean, head first, he doesn't even try to swim against the waves. However, the moment he is in the water, all is calm. The wind stops, the strength of currents suddenly weaken. It would seem God above does not wish for him to perish, He grants him a second chance, some would say. Some would say that God looks to him with favor, for surviving the harshness of stormy waves. However to him, he will see it as a curse. His body is transported to the shore, a long way off from the cliff of which he chose to fall. He awakes by the light of the dawn. I live? I should have died, why can't God call me away? Everyone I know hates me, my own children look at me with scorn. For this was not his first time trying to escape, but always by chance, by nature or by the hand God, he lived. He lives and cannot die, at least not by his own hand. If only there was someone willing to take my life for me. If only I could be subjected to inescapable death. What twisted fate has given him a life of grueling surroundings? His home is where he is not loved, ever since his flesh succumbed to the soft skin of she and her friends. He makes up his mind,  if he cannot die, then he shall travel away from whence he came. I shan't return, I will find a home elsewhere, far away from all who persecute me. Early in the morning, he travels up the sandy shores along the beach and though his surroundings appear unfamiliar by shadows and solids all new, he knows where he wants to go, he is not lost.

Don't Call me Home

Just something that I dabble, a pray of my deepest desire. Whoever is reading this, take note, I have been praying this pray on and off, for years. (Please forgive me for any grammatical errors.)

Don't Call me Home

I am still yang, I still have many years to come, many goals to conquer. But I have grown old over the years and as time moves swiftly, I'll barely notice. Time rushes right past me and I foolishly take all for granted. My days are numbered, I think I'm starting to understand just how little I got. So while I still care, listen to this pray: Keep my body in tact, make it strong, agile and wise. Bless me with longevity for years to come. Give me endurance to withstand, patience to withhold. Let me stay healthy always, keep youth always in reach. Allow me to someday proudly wear the Crown of Grey Strands. Let me die of old age, let me die in my sleep, let me die knowing I have served my purpose fully. Don't call me home until I reap all that I have sown!
When I was but a child I labored seldom, I was shrouded with laughter and of innocence. But now that I've grown in more ways than one my mind is vile, my thoughts are wicked, I am passionate, determined, focused and all so distracted to the fact time is fleeting. Time is wasting away. So while I still care, please listen to this pray: Bless me with health, longevity for years to come. Keep my body strong, agile and wise. Don't let me be victimize with lies! Give me endurance to withstand, patience to withhold. Let me someday proudly wear the Crown of Grey Stands. Let me die of old age and not of shame, let me die in my sleep and not in pain, let me die knowing I have seen all I was meant to see. Don't call me home until I have finished the race. Don't call me home! Not yet, not now! Let me die of old age and not of shame, not of greed, not of mourning, let me die in my sleep, not in pain, not in fright, not in doubt, let me die knowing I have done your will.
I still have much to learn, still many lies to overcome. I am waiting for me to realize how precious a life can be. So, until then, don't call me home, don't call me home!
Let me die of old age, let me die in my sleep...
